January Skater of the Month: INQUADABLE HULK!
January Skater of the Month: INQUADABLE HULK!
A new year is upon us and that also means a new skater of the month to open the new year!
January’s skater of the month is Inquadable Hulk. Coming from a hockey background, Inquadable Hulk has brought even more muscle to an already hard-hitting GateKeepers’ squad. A regular on the Travel Team, Hulk’s quiet demeanor hides a raw fury that is unleashed every time he gets onto the track. Hulk helped lead the South Grand Slammers to the Turf Wars Championship in 2011 and looks to help pave the way for a repeat in 2012.

Why did you get into derby?
My younger brother was here at the inception of the Gatekeepers & I didn’t consider playing roller derby until I saw my first men’s bout. After years of playing recreational hockey and making hitting opposing players as an “accident”, because rec leagues doesn’t condone checking, I finally found a way to hit people legally. Hitting people is fun & I love every second of it.
Who do you think has had the most influence on your style of play?
Having been taught by who is probably one of the best teachers of derby in Magnum PIMP, it is hard not to say he is a big influence on every skater on the Gatekeepers. Percy Controls tenacious blocking and hitting has been something that I try to integrate into my game as well. Debaucherous Primes ability to take punishment and grind his way through a bout is pretty awesome, something that is not easy to do.
What skates and wheels do you use?
I am currently skating on Antiks MG2’s with Atom Strokers. The skates have been fantastic without any break-in time and they fit the foot really well. I have been a big fan of having a boot with a higher cut to help with stability.
What was your favorite moment as a gatekeeper?
One would be the most recent Spring Roll and closely followed by the South Grand Slammers winning the first Turf Wars in the Gatekeepers inaugural local season.
What is your pre-bout ritual?
I like to spend the day before bouts by myself, listen to some music and trying to get in a 2 mile jog to loosen the legs up a bit.
What advice do you have for other skaters?
Get comfortable on your skates. Whenever given the opportunity to skate, even if it is just for fun. The more time that you get on your skates, the better.
What is your favorite food?
I am a huge fan of deli’s, so it would be a toss up between Blues City Deli’s pulled pork sandwich and Gioia’s New York Philly Beef.
What is your favorite thing to do outside of derby?
I have a few interests including playing/watching hockey and creating art. But the one thing that trumps all of it is spending time with my 2 year old daughter, being a stay at home dad is pretty rewarding.
If you could remove one penalty from the game, what would it be?
I really don’t have much of a problem with penalties, I have worked pretty hard to be a clean player, so I rarely get into penalty trouble. I could do without minors if I was forced to pick one.
Who would play you in a movie about your life?
It would be a mixture of Neil Patrick Harris (gay), John Goodman (fat) and Lindsey Lohan (party.) It’s a Slammers thing.
