When not busy scaring opponents with his blocking style and creepy clown makeup, the November Skater of the Month is coaching the St. Chux Derby Chix and molding them into a 1st class team. He is…SWEET TOOTH!
Why did you get into Derby?
My then girlfriend had a cousin that was a Smashie and she kept trying to get us to come out and watch. I thought it sounded stupid at first but obviously I changed my mind immediately. My favorite skaters where Chokehold Channel and Jenny Bonebreak. I took bonebreak’s #73 when I started.
Who do you think has had the most influence on your style of play?
Without a doubt it’s Magnum. I try to learn something from everybody, however, there isn’t an original derby thought in my head, it’s all came from Magnum at one point or another.
What skates and wheels do you use?
At the moment 265’s with some XK DA 45s…I’ve been waffling on getting off double action 45 degree plates because they are a little too reactive. I’m still undecided on my next set up. I’m usually on Jukes.
What was your favorite moment as a GateKeeper?
The New York trip where we played Shock Exchange, a hang over bout the next day and then finished the trip off by playing Gotham Roller Girls. The GK/NYSE is my favorite rivalry in derby.
What is your pre-bout ritual?
I don’t have one which I think is essential to my game. A lot of players get way too amped up and make silly adrenaline only plays they never would do in practice or scrimmage. It’s the reason I’m always the calm one out there directing traffic. It burns me sometimes when I do need that extra adrenaline during the plays when the milliseconds and millimeters count.
What advice do you have for other skaters?
Mental and Physical toughness. People constantly underestimate just how long and hard the road actually is. Talent is forged by both quantity of hours you put in and the quality of those hours. No Show Stoppers.
What is your favorite food?
Red Meat. I make up for all the roller derby vegans with my red meat consumption.
What is your favorite thing to do outside of Derby?
Thinking about derby (seriously).
If you could remove one penalty from the game what would it be?
Without a doubt it would be stopped blocking. I know some fans aren’t a fan of scrum starts, however, my job as a blocker is to STOP the jammer. No just get in their way, not inconvenience them, but stop them.
Who would play you in a movie about your life?
Mac from it’s Always Sunny. Skinny Mac, not fat Mac, obvi.
There you have it. November’s Skater of the Month: Sweet Tooth.
